Celebrate the ‘Star Wars’ 40th Anniversary With These Vintage Food Commercials
Every new Star Wars movie is accompanied by a tsunami of ads and merchandise, including, typically, more than a few burger chain tie-ins and affiliated food products. But when the film premiered exactly 40 years ago today, Star Wars had a much smaller promotional footprint because nobody knew just how big of a hit it would be.
But the film landed a few food-related marketing ploys. The movie that would change Hollywood forever made its debut with a poster tie-in from Burger Chef — the now-defunct chain that was memorably featured on Mad Men — and a glass giveaway from Burger King. The first Star Wars-themed fast-food commercial featured C-3P0, R2-D2, Darth Vader, some Jawas, and a free poster with the purchase of a large serving of Coca-Cola for 49 cents.
